Catullus and Cicero: Love and Life in Republican Rome
LAT 201
Fall 2025
Section: 01

We will read portions of Cicero's "Pro Caelio" speech and a selection of the poems of Catullus, with a focus on the tangled social web linking the poet Catullus, the young Caelius, their shared love interest Lesbia/Clodia, and Cicero's long-standing feud with Clodia's brother. We'll get a glimpse behind the curtain of the private lives and public performances of Rome's elite during the late Republic -- complete with secret affairs, political scheming, and even an accusation of poisoning! We will also explore how these texts reflect social and cultural tensions of Rome in the 50s BCE, a period of growing instability not long before the Republic's dramatic fall. This course will fall under the Literature and Performance track.
