MUSC 103
Fall 2025
| Section:

How do we turn sound into symbols -- and how does that change the way we listen, perform, and create? This course introduces the materials of music through the lens of notation, from Western classical traditions to global and experimental approaches. We will explore how different cultures -- and even nonhuman worlds -- organize and express sound, from Western harmony to rhythmic cycles, birdsong, and graphic scores. You will learn to read music, think critically about how it is written, and invent your own ways of capturing sound. No prior experience required. |
