Topic: Hearing Thunder in Silence: C-pop and Social Activism
C-pop* is a frequent omission in the global discussion of music and social activism. In this seminar, we will hear thunder in silence. Students will be exposed to various manifestations and strategies in expressing dissent, nonconformity, protest, and awareness for social justice from generations of C-pop musicians (pop, rock, punk, folk, hip-hop, etc.) across a vast geopolitical area through analysis of genre characteristics, lyrics, instrumentation, timbre, linguistic code switching, use of historical metaphors, and performance practices. Furthermore, students will make contribution to the seminar by bringing in their own examples of music and social activism to critically compare and engage with the examples studied in class, aiming at a more nuanced cross-cultural comprehension of the complex relationship between artistic creativity and socio-political commitment. Chinese language knowledge is not necessary, all lyrics discussed in class are provided with English translation. * Broadly defined as popular songs produced in China, Hongkong, and Taiwan, set to varieties of the Han language as well as other ethnic languages. |
