ENGL 336
Spring 2026
| Section:
01
|
This course may be repeated for credit. |
There may be no greater compliment than "your poem is musical." Then a problem presents itself -- what does that really mean? "Musical" -- used synonymously with that other adjectival nightmare, "beautiful" -- corners the poem and the poet to the mercy of one kind of sound. But just as we have various notions of beauty, poetry also occupies multiplicity -- every poet has their own set of voices. Whether in the variety of languages generating its own sound sensibilities -- to borrow from the pianist Rudolf Serkin who was, in his day, accused of the occasional "ugly sound," his response is "music isn't just about la la la tra la la" -- even ugliness is a repertoire of personal sound, or voice. In this intermediate class, we will identify and perform the voices your poems inhabit, and work to recognize the voices of others troubling the neutral voice. |
