Adaptation for Performance Theater
THEA 221
Spring 2026
| Section:
01
|
This is a writing course for students interested in the study and practice of adapting texts for performance from a variety of non-conventional sources (fiction, poetry, oral history, biography, memoir, newpapers, etc.). The models we will examine include Anna Deveare Smith¿s adaptation of interviews related to social justice (¿Notes from the Field¿) and Lee Breuer¿s modern musical adaptation of Sophocles (¿Gospel at Colonus¿). Initially, students will work with fragments from Dante¿s ¿Inferno¿ and move on to adapting a text of their choice for a final script. The course will be useful for students considering performance adaptations as part of their capstone and honors projects. This course counts towards the Theater Arts category for the THEA major. |
