This course provides a comprehensive introduction to Chinese literature and culture from antiquity through the end of the imperial era. Readings span prose (philosophical, historical, and literary texts; myths and legends; anecdotes; and tales of the strange), poetry (from the Book of Songs through Tang and Song verse), drama, and vernacular fiction. We will consider how literary forms and styles evolved and how they engaged themes such as creativity, gender, literati identity, daily life, and religion. All readings and discussions are in English. No prior background is required. |
