Sophomore Colloquium for Declaring Majors
FILM 305
Spring 2026

This course is designed for sophomores who have completed the CFILM gateway courses and wish to deepen their exploration of film art via a collaborative hybrid of film studies and film production. The course spans three units, each focusing on a set of films with similar generic, tonal, setting, or story attributes -- e.g., comedy, noir, suspense/horror. The beginning of each unit will involve watching and comparatively analyzing feature films, searching for different cinematic solutions to shared questions or different applications of common cinematic tools. Each unit will gradually shift to more fine-toothed film analysis -- e.g., scene breakdowns -- which will then transition to pre-production and production at the CFILM soundstage and/or set house. Each unit will culminate in the filming of a short scene, and students will rotate through different on-set roles across the semester. Through linking film analysis and film production, students will gain a closer understanding of the creative decision-making process in cinema. They will learn how to identify, discuss, understand, and execute a variety of filmmaking tools. Hopefully, this course also encourages students to find new favorite movies in unexpected places, to discover topics that draw them to further study in future film electives, and to better know their sophomore classmates via a collaborative, small class setting. |
