Contemporary Dance Technique II/III: Countertechnique
DANC 300
Fall 2025
Section: 01
This course may be repeated for credit.

This Contemporary Dance Technique course will empower the student to find more freedom in the body/mind through Countertechnique. Countertechnique is a system of movement designed to help the dancer think about the dancing body, focusing on the process of incorporating information into the action of directing and counter-directing the body through space. Developed over the past 30 years by Dutch dancer/choreographer, Anouk van Dijk, the technique provides tools for body and mind to deal with the demanding dance practices of the 21st century. Within a clear structure of exercises, the Countertechnique class thoroughly prepares the body for rehearsal and performance, enabling dancers to move bigger, more fluidly and more spatially, while becoming stronger and more flexible. Dancers are encouraged to be proactive in discovering connections and solutions, to be less concerned with judging themselves, and to work in a healthy way physically, mentally, and emotionally. Students will become more available to movement, find dynamic balance and may find a deepened joy of dancing.
