This course examines the dynamic transformations of the Korean peninsula from the late 19th century to the present. Part 1 explores Korea¿s political and economic development, focusing on how a country the size of Minnesota came to occupy a pivotal role in East Asian and global politics. In doing so, we trace the historical roots of the divergent paths taken by North and South Korea. Part 2 turns to the sweeping social and cultural changes that have shaped Korean identity and its place in a globalized world. Through a mix of primary sources (including writings from nationalist leaders and everyday people) and secondary works by historians, sociologists, and political scientists, students will learn to place contemporary Korean issues in historical perspective and gain a multifaceted understanding of the peninsula¿s political, economic, social, and cultural transformations. |
