In this course, we will explore German-language literature and films produced after 1989. The seminar will fulfill a twofold task: (1) it will critically engage with some of the most innovative literary and filmic creative work done in the German language since the fall of the Berlin wall; and (2) it will offer extensive opportunities to explore and critique how these artworks deal with key social shifts and issues of the most recent period of German history: the process of the German reunification; globalization, pop culture, and the growing "precarization" of work; the engagement with Germany's past; and the tension between local, national, and global identities in the context of migration and multiculturalism. We will examine how aesthetics and politics intersect in the analyzed works and discuss the diverse literary and visual forms and stylistic devices with which the authors experiment: pop literature, the deconstruction of narrative patterns, and multimedia storytelling. |
