This course is limited to students already admitted into the Human Rights Advocacy Minor (HRAD-MN).
Fresh from having completed the Human Rights Standards Course (CSPL-228), you will already have a good understanding of how global and domestic human rights institutions should (in principle) function to respect, protect, and fulfill human rights norms. In this 1¿ 1¿ credit seminar we turn our attention towards the specific methods of human rights activism. The seminar is structured as an intensive workshop where we practice and refine skills, challenge ourselves and our classmates to reflect deeply about our emerging identities as aspiring human rights activists, eat lunch together, and prepare actively for our human rights fact-finding practicum (which will take place during the summer break).
The course continues some of the themes raised during the Human Rights Standards course. We will discuss what others have written about the ethics of "doing" human rights, but we will also develop our own personal ethical framework in anticipation of our own field research. Likewise, we will read what others have written about the process of effectuating attitudinal change about human rights, but we will also refine our own theories of change in the real-world contexts in which we will soon be working. Much of our learning will come about experientially and through thoughtful discussion, so please come to class prepared to engage. |
