Introduction to Time-Based Media
ARST 286
Spring 2026
Section: 01
Crosslisting: DDC 286, IDEA 286

This introductory course offers a comprehensive exploration of time-based media in the expanded field, providing a foundational skillset for students interested in fine arts and media practices, yet open to all majors eager to develop their creative and critical voice. A core focus of the course is the act of making, which will be coupled with an investigation into how video can transform our relationship with ourselves, others, and the material world. Through screenings of historical and contemporary video art, we'll investigate theoretical frameworks, asking critical questions such as: What sorts of videos do we consider "art," and how might we use video as a tool for empathy, accountability, and aesthetic inquiry?

Students will build essential practical skills through regular technical exercises and hands-on projects, including camera operation, sound recording and design, lighting techniques, and video and sound editing, utilizing industry-standard software and various capture devices. Each assignment will be contextualized through group discussions and readings, investigating established video art traditions as well as the medium's role in vernacular applications like live-streaming, and social media. By the end of the course, students will gain both technical facility and a sharp critical eye for time-based art and culture.
