Challenges to Democracy in East Asia
CEAS 325
Fall 2025
Section: 01
Crosslisting: GOVT 305

East Asia is home to a remarkable diversity of political regimes, economies, religions, and cultural traditions. The region includes one of the most repressive countries in the world, North Korea, alongside authoritarian regimes like China that tout political stability and rapid economic growth. At the same time, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan represent fully consolidated democracies -- albeit ones that continue to grapple with significant domestic and international challenges. This course examines the workings and challenges of democracy in East Asia by addressing questions such as: What are the defining features and challenges of existing democracies in East Asia? To what extent are these features unique to the region? Why do some citizens in East Asia find authoritarianism appealing? How do historical experiences with authoritarian rule shape democratic institutions and political culture today? And does China's authoritarian model present a challenge to democracy in the region?
