Human life is forged through constitutive relationships with a vast array of nonhuman actors. While anthropologists have always recognized this, escalating concerns about the nature of these relationships in a moment of great ecological precarity has led to a profusion of ethnographic attention to the human/nonhuman interface. In this course, we will engage multispecies ethnographies from around the world and consider how multispecies approaches connect to the analysis of subjects like race, gender, and nationality. We will also explore how grappling with the representational challenges posed by species difference can sharpen ethnographic attunement in all research contexts. |
