Junior Studio is an interdisciplinary, studio-based course designed for advanced Art Studio majors that centers on the idea of "Call and Response." Our work doesn't happen in isolation but through exchange. This course positions artmaking as conversation -- between artists, across disciplines, and through time. The class will be structured in repeating two-week segments. The first segment will focus on a "call": an in-depth engagement with a specific artist's practice, or a close analysis of a particular work or body of work (including, but not limited to, art, music, and film). Together we'll unpack each practice or work conceptually, contextually, and materially and identify the ideas central to our understanding of it as a class. This work will take place through reading, in-class discussion, student-led presentation, and class visitors. The second segment focuses on "response": students will develop their own work in whatever medium they choose as replies, riffs, or counterpoints to the "call" -- testing how response becomes creation and exploring how their artistic instincts shape their output. Student work will be shared and discussed in a group critique format that encourages both critical feedback and supportive dialogue. The goal of Junior Studio is not to produce technicians of any single medium, but to help students develop a deeper connection to their own creative processes. The course emphasizes ideas: how we arrive at them, how they take form, and how they communicate meaning. Ultimately, students will build intimacy with their artistic instincts, expand their understanding of interdisciplinary practice, and situate their work within the cultural and artistic contexts that inform and inspire them. |
