In this seminar students will explore a variety of dramatic texts written and performed during the French Renaissance (c. 1500-1610). The first two-thirds of the semester will provide an overview of the poetics, rhetoric, and performance of early French theater, followed by discussions about gender, religion, politics, violence, and other topics as they arise within each play. Authors will include Marguerite de Navarre, Jean de La Péruse, Étienne Jodelle, François d'Amboise, Louise Labé, Robert Garnier, and Catherine Des Roches. During the last third of the semester, students will participate in a collaborative digital (online) critical edition of one of the plays studied. Emerging technologies in the field of digital humanities will be integrated into this lab portion of the seminar, as well as more conventional methods of establishing critical editions. Readings, written assignments, and class discussions will be in French. |
