Writing in the Age of Generative AI (FYS)
WRCT 155F
Spring 2026
Section: 01

Why does anyone need to learn how to write if we have generative AI? In this course, we will take up this commonly asked question, exploring the evolving role of generative AI, particularly large language models (LLMs), in the teaching and practice of writing in higher education. Together, we will consider why we need to learn to write and how we have been taught to write and the ways these educational approaches have shaped what we think writing is in order to imagine what the work of writing might look like in the age of generative AI. By critically examining the intersection of AI technology and writing pedagogy, the course addresses foundational philosophical and conceptual questions such as: What is intelligence? What does it mean to learn and to educate? What constitutes authenticity and voice in writing? We will investigate these questions through the lens of various writing education theories and juxtapose them with how LLMs function, learn, and generate text. In addition to these conceptual questions, the class will also be a testing ground for the ways in which generative AI dis/engages writers with our writing processes and practices. We will experiment with different generative AI tools at various stages of the writing process. This hands-on approach will help us explore complex questions about the ethics of AI, particularly around individuality and collaboration.
