This course explores urban life in ancient Mediterranean port cities, where harbors facilitated connectivity and long-distance trade and created cities that were defined by multicultural exchange and constantly reshaping identities. Through case studies drawn from Greek and Roman sites, the class will examine the lives of residents and port workers, focusing on themes such as trade, urban development, art, religion, food, and spectacle. With an emphasis on the archaeological material left behind, the course also explores how narratives about the past are shaped by the nature of surviving evidence. |
