Reorienting East Asia: A Thematic Study of China, Japan, Korea, and Beyond
HIST 359
Spring 2026
Section: 01

Although the concept of East Asia is firmly cemented in the western imagination, the reality behind the east Asian region -- if one was to call it that -- is far more complex. This course will explore topics in history, politics, religion, language, economics, and modern media as they relate to the three countries usually characterized as east Asia: China, Japan, and Korea. In so doing, you will learn about various connections that bind the countries together as well as the areas in which they do not connect. You will also learn about other players in the region who do not typically receive the attention they deserve, such as Mongolia, Tibet, India, the Ryukyu Islands, and Indochina. By the end of this course, you will be able to highlight unique aspects of each country and qualify the connections made between multiple cultures that have been neighbors for over a millennium.
