History is not simple. It is not the past, but a way of talking about the past with a unique claim to authority. For this reason no imperialism ever fails to claim a history, while at the same time every revolution rewrites it. History is an activity, it is a practice. Whether in the analog world of pen and paper or in the digital metaverse, history is its data. To practice history is to select an object of study and to "data-fy" it. In this course you will be empowered to become not only a reader of history, but a creator of historical data, a scholar actively seizing the current digital history moment as an occasion to break down history's myths through the activities of research, datafication, and analysis. We will critique the past as it has been conceived by upending archives through the construction of relational databases: a quiet revolution defying the colonizer and empowering the colonized. History can always be claimed by the powerless. Everywhere, and out of anything, we seek to democratize the historical present. Join the revenge of the archive. |
