Where and what is the animal in Roman literature? This advanced Latin course explores selections from Virgil's Georgics and Aeneid, and Ovid's Metamorphoses to understand how Roman poets utilize the category and reality of the animal in their literary worlds. What can intrusive animals and "beastly reading" tell us about Roman poetic agendas and conceptions of the human from antiquity to today? We will also experiment with comparative approaches by introducing Greek literary antecedents and Sanskrit literature in translation -- what might we learn from comparative reading across other ancient literary traditions? Readings and critical literature in Classical scholarship and Animal Studies will inform our analyses over the course of the semester. This course counts towards the Literature and Performance concentration in the Classical Studies Major. This course requires prerequisite LAT 200 level or permission of instructor to enroll. |
