In "The Translation Circuit," students will read twelve works in translation from around the world. The course will be taught by just as many instructors -- twelve Wesleyan professors and guests, each teaching a single text that has been translated into English from a language that we know or translate from ourselves. The course proceeds chronologically and traces, via translation history and practice, the lines of influence among major works of world literature, possibly including Sappho's fragments, Ovid's¿"Ars Amatoria," Ibn Hazm's "The Ring of the Dove," Nikolai Gogol's and Gabriel Garcia Marquez's short stories, Paul Celan's poems, Bertolt Brecht's plays, Oguz Atay's¿"Korkuyu Beklerken,"¿and Elena Ferrante's "Days of Abandonment."¿No prior knowledge of any specific language would be required, although we imagine that the student cohort collectively will have some knowledge of all the languages from which our texts have been translated. |
