This introductory course is for students of all majors eager to think critically and creatively about their relationship to video. How many videos do you have on your phone? How does the intimate, often humorous content we create relate to public space and artistic expression? Together, we'll explore the rich tradition of video art, which began in the mid-20th century when new technology was suddenly placed in the hands of everyday people. Artists quickly adopted, subverted, and transformed this specialized equipment beyond its initial commercial intent. Through hands-on projects, you'll learn to use affordable, widely available tools like CapCut and DaVinci Resolve to move beyond commercial aesthetics and create personal works of art. You will also be introduced to the specialized video equipment available on campus, focusing on the fundamental principles that can be applied to any camera you pick up. No prior experience is required: just a willingness to challenge and experiment with the videos you create every day. |
