Civics is the study and practice of how power works. It challenges us to apply our understanding to imagine the future of American democracy. In this course we explore the nature of power, how it's used, and who participates in shaping the rules, rights, and responsibilities that govern our lives. At the core of this course is one fundamental question: What does it mean to be a citizen? This course invites students to explore the complex and contested ideas of civics and citizenship in the United States. It moves beyond simply memorizing facts and dates to trace the fight for democracy from the founding era to today's most urgent civic debates on topics like voting rights, civility, and media literacy. We place a particular emphasis on youth leadership in challenging the boundaries of civic engagement. Drawing on landmark texts, Supreme Court cases, speeches, and organizing strategies, students will examine how citizenship has been defined, denied, and defended across generations. Through interactive video lectures, primary source analysis, creative assignments, and community-based inquiry, students will deepen their understanding while imagining their own vision for a civic future. |
