Advanced Topics in Performance Studies: Ecological Performance/Performing Ecology
THEA 320
Spring 2027
Section: 01

We are living in a time of increased climate change and environmental degradation. This course approaches the topics of ecological crisis and environmental justice through the medium of performance. Exploring a range of contemporary theater and performance traditions that speak directly to the care of our shared land, water, and air, we will consider the theoretical and practical elements of ecological performance and art. In class students will read new work in the field of performance studies, view the history of both live and recorded ecologically engaged art works. Students should be prepared to both write a culminating critical essay and create new work in response to artistic prompts. In class we will explore nature drag, parades, pageants, ephemeral sculptural interventions, and written engagements with the physical world. Site visits might include Manresa Island, Connecticut River, Midden Lookout Park, and Indian Hill.
