In this course, students will have the opportunity to engage deeply with various issues related to elections, which are a critical instrument of national-level governance. Around the world, and especially in Africa, elections serve as an increasingly contentious political arena. In recent years, we have observed the adoption of new campaign, electoral, and post-election strategies by incumbent, opposition, and civil society actors. In this course, students will investigate these trends in historical and political context, focusing on four African states (Ghana, Malawi, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe) which each represent a different type of post-colonial political trajectory. |
